Stalking at Craiganour Estate
We are now in the peak stag stalking season at Craiganour Estate. It is vital to manage our deer numbers in order to maintain an ecological balance on the estate, as well as providing traditional sporting income and employment. The red stags are Britain’s largest land mammal and demand is high for the stalking experience.
Red deer stalking in Scotland is a unique and unforgettable experience. While being guided by our friendly and experienced stalkers through the rugged heather clad hills spying on the deer, you will form a strong bond and discuss all manner of topics, while the deep gullies, soggy bogs and mass expanses of hill make you feel very much part of the natural landscape.
Once the stags have been found and you make a quiet and steady approach, your heart will be racing and your senses heightened. The deer have an acute sense of smell and the stalker will use the wind and the landscape to ensure you are not spotted. In position over the rifle, taking deep breaths to steady the shot, you pray the stag will remain still and calm. If either you or the stag becomes restless it’s game over. Once the successful shot has been made the stalker will prepare the stag to be removed from the hill. At Craiganour Estate we use Argo 6x6 vehicles because the ground is too wet for the traditional method of using ponies. The stags head can be prepared back at the larder for you to take home as a trophy of a memorable day spent in the beautiful highland Perthshire countryside stalking magnificent stags. If you are also taking accommodation at Craiganour Lodge, then it’s back to the lodge to a welcome hot shower and delicious meal provided by your personal chef, followed by a dram in front of the fire sharing tales of the day and then an early night!
